Mini-novela: Rosa y sus espinas

Empty as I feel, this house,

only four children left, and horseflies,

always the whine of horseflies.

Afternoons I suck candies,

and watch novelas, watch

goldenwomen startling as a full moon.

A novela of my life would be called

Rosa y sus espinas or maybe The Whine.

Episode I: The Fires

Young, he and I scurry barefoot, heads down,

into the night green with ripe corn,

hiding in cornsilk, in the rustle

of his father’s fields. Cautious

as rats, we roast corn under cold

stars, grind our teeth into

cobs we gnaw without tasting,

frantic after hours of water, only water.

All day at the big house, dog tongues

lap rice and meat, while in our jacal

we count each bean and kernel she sends,

stingy as this dry dirt, his mother,

waiting for him to leave my jacal, and me.

Nights our fingers bury ashes, the black

stain year after year, hiding

our fires, the little ones

also scurrying barefoot, one two, three,

four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten,

eleven heads down, hiding in the cornsilk

of their grandfather’s fields after a day

of water, water, water, their whine,

the horseflies’ whine.
